This project focused on a two-block corridor from Emanuel Cleaver Blvd to E 45th Street in Kansas City, MO, near the UMKC campus. Its purpose was to create a master plan for my planning studio's final project.
My design goal was to create a space people would want to visit. Right now individuals do not feel particularly safe to be in this area, especially at night, so integrating in space that people would want to visit, such as a Chicken and Pickle, a park, and other experiential activities brightens this space and adds watchful eyes over the site.
I took traffic into account when designing this space. Currently, Troost is a 4 lane wide road, I am recommending it be taken down to two lanes. This will keep traffic from moving as quickly down the road improving safety, while also prioritizing pedestrian access.
Above are examples of the new developments being added in. The top and bottom left structures are existing developments in the form of an old fire station and Auto World Garage. I am recommending these stay as the buildings are in good shape. I am adding the strip buildings on the top and bottom right. The designs are based off classic Kansas City architecture with the goal of feeling like they were always apart of this site.
