Over 16 weeks, I worked with the neighborhood of Fairmount (located in Independence, MO). The goal was to develop an urban planning intervention that could benefit the community. After researching the area through site visits, speaking with residents and neighborhood leaders, I gained insight into what makes this neighborhood unique, which led to my intervention.
My Intervention centers around activating Davis Park. I learned that this neighborhood is passionate about soccer, and I observed this during my site visits. Right now, there is no safe place to play this sport, and Davis Park seemed like a prime location. Currently, the park is an empty plot of grass. I have suggested adding two soccer fields and a small playground to activate the site.
My research included Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), which included but is not limited to creating a neighborhood asset map (Above Left), a vacancy map (Above Right), creating an existing conditions report, and producing a paper on how to leverage the strengths, skills, and gifts of the residents to make this project a reality.
